Beyond The Wasteland by Dana Daidouji
Prologue
In all honesty, he did not know what to do and the very notion scared him to no end for he was used to everything but the uncertain. A quarter of an hour ago he had received a call from one distraught man informing that his little girl was in critical condition somewhere in Japan. Albeit a tad bit frantic, the man was known for his professionalism and wasted no time to inform his employer about the happenings.
Some would think of it being bad luck, but he did not even dare to lower himself into believing such a feeble explanation. Others attributed it to her being at the wrong place in the wrong time but that thought did naught to comfort him for there were only two things held for certain in the blank maze of uncertainties that his mind had become. Firstly and foremost, she would live; and secondly, she had been targeted.
... A kidnapping gone awry, perhaps; his reasoning supplied for him to fill in the blanks.
In a rush he packed everything worthy of taking and had his personal assistant on the phone talking with the jet pilot with strict instructions of being able to take off at once. It would be a tiring and very long flight given that his current location was for all practical purposes at the other side of the world. He had never prayed before but hoped dearly that he made it on time for his little girl and for she to be alright.

A woman was unlocking the door of a black rental car when her mobile rang out loud and clear with a happy-go-lucky MP3 ring-tone. She sighed tiredly and made a grab for it within the depths of her Luis Vuitton purse; almost dropping the matching briefcase in the process.
"Hello?" She answered without bothering with the caller-ID.
Gray-blue eyes narrowed in concentration, taking in every tidbit of information fed to her. "I'm on my way to the airport now." She said seconds before closing the flip with a push of her index finger.

The sight was gruesome and truly shocking at best. Often time people were more or less accustomed to seeing adults in a condition such as hers or even worst; and it still was grotesque. But the scene playing in front of the nurses at the E.R in one of Japan's most revered Hospitals was something out of a sick horror movie.
A child not over ten years old laid almost lifeless on a stretcher; if not for the slight up and down movements of her chest in breathing, while paramedics rushed her down corridors, gesturing and yelling for people to get out of the way. The girl seemed to have bathed in her own blood and some of it had begun to coagulate and cake to her clothes. She had an all too pale complexion and the dark, sweaty, hair stuck to her temples and forehead in stark contrast to the lack of pigment.
Away she was carried and through sliding doors with many a prayer sent on her wake.

A red Ferrari 612 Scaglietti sped down the long winding road, past the "viking" buffet at the Sea World Hotel in Kamogawa City, past the Sea World park itself and finally to a heliport next to a rocky beach. The driver's hard and long trained abilities were used at best to fulfill the mission at hand.
They could not be late.

It all happened around four in the afternoon, but it was just at two in the next morning where he set foot inside the cold and biting confines of Kameda Medical Center. He went straight to the receptionist's desk where he was given all the information he needed and was encouraged to wait in the artfully decorated lobby.
"Morning, I'm the neurosurgeon and am here to talk to you about our present condition," began a newcomer with a soft feminine voice. "I'm sorry to tell you sir that there's naught we can do," – she paused to examine the reaction of the man in front of her but found nothing on his visage so she continued, "the bullet fractured the skull badly and there are particles of bone with unidentified agents inside of it; she's lost too much blood and the electroencephalogram is not encouraging. In the scale of Gasglow a healthy person that walks and talks scores fifteen; but I can't give her even a two... I'm sorry to say that the child is brain-dead."
He heard her little speech with attention and felt frustrated because nothing seemed to permeate into his brain. All he could think was that his little girl needed anything to live and whatever she needed, she got.
"Are you with me, sir?" he heard her ask after a full minute.
"I want you to do anything in your power to save her." He said and it sounded like an order. His whole body language spoke of a resolution that could not be easily deterred.
"But sir, as I already told you, there's nothing to be done." And she began to worry about this man.
Again, he said nothing and she sighed demurely sending a prayer to the heavens to get the enlightenment she needed to end this predicament soon and without much hassle. She was about to say something when the look in his eyes prevented her from doing so. It was so intense, bordering on madness by desperation; that she sighed again and fingering something inside the back-pocket of her pants opted for saying instead, "only a miracle can save her," while taking out something and placing it in his hand.
She smiled softly, touched by the love of this man for the little girl, turned around and walked away with haste.
Seconds after her disappearance from sight he looked down.
There, in the light grasp of his hand lay a thin booklet and a Rosary.
His brows furrowed a bit. He did not know how to pray.
