Blind

Blind

Kagome took a deep breath and entered the hospital room of the usually stoic man.

" Good morning Maru-Sama.", she greeted him and smiled at his typical response, his blue eyes did not meet her own brown ones, his lip slightly curled. Head high she continued on with her routine, refusing to allow his actions to subdue her cheerful mood. "And how are we this morning?" she began to tidy his room, adding water to the many flowers he'd received.

"Must you continuously plague me with idle conversation?" he growled.

"Oh come on, was breakfast really that bad?" she arranged his expensive vases, he just shot her an unamused glare, "These are absolutely lovely, there are red roses, and yellow Lillys. The whole sixth floor smells of a garden.

"I wouldn't know I cant see them!" he cut her off roughly.

" I think I'll just place a bouquet here on your night stand. There, can you smell them now, or perhaps you care little for flowers, which would explain the upturned nose. "

"Perhaps my disgust is not with the flowers." Still the impertinent girl prattled on, he sensed her nearness, she smelled of cherry blossom. He tried to make out her figure, dam his eyes, still everything blurred together.

"But you can surly smell them." Kagome added, and he turned again to find her, it was creepy how well his searching eyes found hers. They Doctor had removed the bandages already five days, but still the young pallid haired man gained little sight.

"Don't pity me girl." He snapped breaking her thoughts away from his condition. She read his chart, checked his IV, then made note of his vitals.

"I don't pity you for your injuries." She replied sternly, everyday he'd treated her to the same gruff voice, and it was beginning to wear on her already worn fortitude. "I pity you for your lack of seeing the bright side."

"Like what?" he snapped, "False hope. No I refuse to believe in false hope. I prefer facts."

Kagome placed her hands on her hips, "Listen here, Mr Poor me poor me! The doctor said there was a chance your sight would return in time. That means not right away. In the mean time you could at least accept the well wishes and support of your family!"

He tightened his fists against the hospital sheets, his blond hair almost looked white in the sun, and his almond shaped eyes, gave him an elvish expression. So young, he had to be at least mid thirties, why was he so ready to give in to despair. She'd seen him refuse visitors and every nurse on the floor refused to spend any time in his presence.

"What do you know of my family?" she frowned at his ability to keep his temper boiling under, was he naturally so cold and callus.

"I know that your brother has come to visit and has been turned away each time, and what of your daughter, I believe she has sent these water painted drawings to you. Do you so easily toss them aside as you do hope." Kagome refused to allow him to feel sorry for himself, nobody deserved to feel self loathing not to this degree. He never left the large hospital room, she'd heard of his temper with the sight therapist.

Sessho felt her so easily steal his words, and he felt the pangs of guilt hit his heart. "They don't need to see me this way, besides my brother is not an allie. As for Rin, she is only four. I refuse for Rin to see me in such surroundings, it would only scare her." Kagome held the large painting in her hands pulling up a chair beside his bed.

What did he know of children and hospitals, she recalled her own childhood spent in waiting rooms for her father to relay the news of his wife's condition. What did he know of scary, when Sota and Shippo had been left in her care there was no one to help bury mother, Kagura and their father had long disappeared.

As a child she grew accustomed to the cold sterile walls, and this nurse's aid position felt natural to her, how many years had she spent wondering these corridors, or sat in the smaller rooms awaiting her mothers long deserved peace.

And now it was her job to entertain the troubled family members, looking for some reassurance that there is some light at the end of long tunnel.

"Children are very resilient." He caught the sudden weariness in her usually light voice.

"What do you hold in your hands?" he asked offhandedly. Kagome pushed her own selfish musings down out of sight, ashamed at her own feelings of self pity.

"This is one of your daughters' paintings. It's very detailed for some one so young. It is of a large house and I believe it to be a self portrait. The young girl is wearing a green dress and waving." She described every color to him after that, setting the butcher paper in his lap. "You are so lucky to be loved and endured."

"Do you mean endeared?" he corrected her, but the girl only shook her dark head, yes he could make out raven long raven hair.

"No, I meant endured. Now I will see you around noon, I must complete my rounds." She stepped out from the private hospital room, side stepping the florist who only brought up another wasted bouquet.

"Then I will see you then." He waved her off, nearly stiffening a low chuckle with a quick cough. She paused and only smiled back at him, and he could sense her light leaving him in his semi darkness.
