The Engagement

"Kagome, will you mate with me?" The question startled 17 year old Kagome. As she stared into the eyes of her first love InuYasha in his human form. She said the first thing that came to mind....

"Are you sure?"

"Keh, of course I'm sure. You're the only wench I can put up with for longer than a minute. And....."

"And what?" Kagome asked with a knowing smile. She looked at InuYasha, her stomach fluttered.

"I..Love....You" Kagome's face lit up with the glow from her smile her stomach fluttered with anticipation.

"Yes, I'll mate with you."

"Really?"

"..really."

Inuyasha smiled shyly before returning to his usual, uncaring, hanyou self. The sun's rays breached the horizon and the silver returned to his hair and the golden-amber hue emerged in his eyes.

"I can't wait to tell Sango and Miroku."

"Um.. could we wait a while before telling them?"

"Why? Are you ashamed of being my mate to be?" a cold, harshness replaced his loving tone as his eyes began to tint red.

"No, no that's not it. It's just that... um... Sango and I haven't talked to each other for a long time ....and I think, that if I told her first... we could become closer."

"Well.. ok... I..guess.." suspicion was evident in his eyes as he stared at Kagome.

'Oh my god! What am I going to say?!!' Kagome thought.

She absentmindedly walked through the forest with InuYasha before coming to the camp site. Sango held her fist in the air threatiningly over Miroku as Kilala watched from beside the fire.

"Kagome!" Shippo yelled as he jumped into his mother's arms. He sniffed the air and asked innocently..

"Mama? Why do you smell like InuYasha?"

"Well.. that's... um.. because.. um..."

InuYasha interrupted her as she was fumbling for an excuse.

"Because she's gonna be my mate you runt."

The whole camp site went silent staring intently at Kagome as her face heated up and reddened.

"SIT Boy! SIT! SIT! SIT!!"

*thump*thump*thump*THUMP*

"I told you not to tell them." She stared at the hurt faces of her friends and the one disappointed face of Sango. "Because I wanted to tall to Sango about it fiirst..um..Let's go Sango."

Sango reached over to a bright yellow backpack and pulled out a few bottles of bathing necessities. She grabbed a new kimono and walked to the hot spring, silently answering her.

Kagome stepped onto Inuyasha, purposefully planting her heel in his back.

"Shippo?"

"Yes mama?

"Would you mind keeping an eye on Miroku for me?"

"Sure, but can I have some candy first?"

Kagome pulled some pocky out from her backpack and gave it to Shippo. She grabbed a new uniform and followed Sango.

*at the hot spring*

The steam rose from the water making the air heated and humid, Kagome silently stripped her clothes and walked over to Sango. She was standing, back facing a boulder, eyes closed in meditation.

"So, when are you going to tell 'him'" she spoke up.

"Sango, he isn't replying to me when I call him."

"Then you'll just have to tell Inuyasha that you can't mate with him."

"But, I love him and he loves me." Sango's eyes softened at her sister's face but soon turned stoic.

"If you had really loved him then you wouldn't have done what you did. If he had really loved you then he wouldn't have sent you crying to 'him'."

"He's just being stubborn, I'm sure that if I meet with him in person then I'll be able to mate Inuyasha.

"Are you sure."

"Of course" 'not reall'

"Then go for it, but you shouldn't lead Inuyasha on like this."

"I know but I can't tell him that I mated with his brother."
