Chapter 1: Straight Tequila Night
Welcome friends; let me set things up for you. Our story takes place in a country & western bar, the Blue Texas Moon. At first glance, one might think this was a typical cowboy bar, but alas, they would be wrong. Sure, everywhere you looked you would see beer, peanut shells on the floor, line dancing, guys comparing war scars, guys discussing John Deere's, drunken singing and a sea of 10 gallon hats. But this bar was different, 'special' one might say. Do you see the group of guys crowded in front of the bartenders? Just wander up to the bar, order yourself a round of your favorite and listen in. This group of regulars seems to be eagerly awaiting the arrival of something.... Or someone....

The air was slightly smoky, as if the Blue Texas Moon had the ability to create clouds within its aged wooden walls. Neon signs were muted by the smoke, casting an eerie, unearthly glow. The dark atmosphere perfectly set the mood for all those who chose to drink within its embrace. It was one of calm and familiarity. Of friends and kin. A balance of relaxation and excitement.
The bell over the front door gave a small chime.
"Hey, who's that, just walked in?"
"Tony, Mary's old man."
"Oh."
Another round was ordered and talk continued over the local high school football team's chances at beating their longtime rival. Scores and rosters were discussed and debated at the top of their lungs.
The bell chimed a second time, effectively grabbing the attention of the bar once again.
"Aw yeah! Kouga just came in."
"Just like cat-fishin'. Hope he smells the bait."
"Bingo. She's been spotted."
The regulars, blue-collar boys in their 40's, turned to the bartenders. The two bartenders in question looked at each other, eyebrows cocked. The men glanced at the smaller of the two, a female in her late 20's, leaning against the counter with her arms crossed casually.
"Well, Pup? What's yer call?" asked the man with peppered hair. Folks know him as Old Bill, 'cause his son, Bill Jr. works the same job he does, so it helps folks sort them out. But this is not his story.
Pup eyed the dark-haired biker who was making his way across the bar, straight for the table in the corner.
'That man can fill out a pair of jeans. Did he pour himself into them or just paint the denim on?' Pup mentally questioned, determined not to blush at the thought. 'That cotton shirt is two sizes to small. If he sneezes, it will tear clean off'. Images of Kouga as the Hulk sprang to mind. Stifling a giggle, Pup then balked, realizing that Kouga was swaggering, apparently hoping his target would take notice.
The table Kouga was headed due diligently for had only one occupant, a raven-haired woman who was doing shots of a clear liquid. It must be quite potent, since she grimaces and exhales with each swig. 'That stuff does go down hard and burns your throat like a bitch', Pup thought.
Turning her eyes to the men before her, she reached under the bar counter for a shot glass. Pup thumped the glass upside down on the bar with a small 'clink' sound, then rapped her knuckles on the bar once.
"Whoop! Rejection!"
"Grab the "Kouga" paper."
The male bartender did just that. "Did everyone sign the pool? What's the pot?"
At this, Pup piped up, "3 bucks each this bet, Jess."
"Alright, you heard the lady," Jess continued. "Everyone who's in, put yer money down."
Money hit the table as all turned to watch the event unfold.
"Go get 'er, boy!"
"Poor bastard."
Cheers and shouts followed the burly biker as he sauntered over to the table containing our raven-haired beauty. When Kouga reached the small table, the girl's head snapped up.
"He's out of the gate!", the patrons cheered.
None of this was heard by said man, ironically due in most part by the music blaring the song "I smell T-R-O-U-B-L-E". The cheering grew in pitch as each man shouted for his favored outcome.
"Stay on 'er, boy!"
"Pull back!"
"Come on, man! Show some backbone!"
"Run, boy, run!"
"Oooooo... that don't look too good," Earl exclaimed as the woman stood up and brought both her fists down hard on the table.
"Hold in there, boy!"
The woman, Kagome, was now gesturing violently at the man and making some very rude hand signs. She was very, very mad and Kouga's determined stance was starting to leave him, along with his courage.
"HOT DAMN!!!!"
Kouga started to back down from the onslaught of the petite girl, cowering slightly. Finally he backed up two steps, said something, then turned tail and left. Defeated.
"TIME!" Jess stopped the watch and called it. "47 seconds. That means.... 40-50 seconds is.... Old Bill."
"HOT SHIT! Pay up!" Old Bill yelled joyously.
Pup slowly shook her head as she cut another lime slice, anticipating her next order.
Kagome picked up the salt shaker that had been knocked over by her outburst, brushing the grains off the table. Settling back in her chair, Kagome heaved a heavy sigh and tilted her hat forward. Shoulders slumped in weariness as she raised her left hand, the first 2 fingers slightly extended.
Pup grabbed the bottle of tequila and headed over to the, now quiet, girl.
'No one ever learns,' Pup gave a mental sigh. 'You just gotta leave her alone on a straight tequila night'.
