A Second Chance by Meian no Uta
New Life, Old Friends
It's been two years, since I said goodbye to that life. I still wonder what happened to all of them. I saw Sango yesterday. We talked. She and Miroku have an apartment, not far from here. She is about three months pregnant. It seems I'm not the only one who started over with a new life. She keeps in touch with Kati too.
School starts up again today. Kikyou and I are going shopping later. Despite differences, we have become quite close. Almost like sisters. And there is no one to try and take this happiness away from me.
I do wonder how Sesshoumaru is. I did love him, for a time. I loved both brothers, and in the end, I lost both. I think, that if he were to show up now, I would stay with Kouga. Sesshoumaru chose to leave, and he will have to live with that choice. Kouga has been the best thing to happen to me in a long time, and I know he loves me.
But I do not love him.
Kagome stood once again in front of her mirror. Since she had said goodbye to her old way of living, she had changed. She was now enrolled at Tokyo University and received very good grades. She had her steady boyfriend, Kouga Iro. She had many friends. She had a loving family. She shared an apartment with her cousin, Kikyou. She had everything anyone could ever want.
And she didn't care. There was still something missing. She jumped when the doorbell rang.
Running a brush through her hair, she hurried to answer the door. A young man stood there. He was younger than she was, and looked familiar.
"Kagome? That you?" He tilted his head in a way that only one person she had ever known did.
"Oh my God! Shippou!! How have you been?" Kagome hugged Shippou. He had been Souta's best friend before, before everything. And she hadn't seen him since Souta died.
"Good. You? You seem, different." Dammit. She had forgotten how good he was at picking up feelings. She let go of him.
"I am different, Kit." She moved aside to let him in. He shook his head.
"Can't come in, 'gome. I came to deliver a message to you. Some guy asked me to tell you he's in town, and wants to see you."
"Who?" She couldn't imagine who would come to see her.
"He told me to give you this. I have to go now. Can I come back some time?" He handed her a folded piece of paper.
"Of course! Why don't you come to dinner tomorrow night. You can meet Kikyou and Aunt Kaede. They'll love you." Shippou nodded, and walked away.
Kagome closed the door and unfolded the note. In the neat, beautiful handwriting that she knew so well, was something she hadn't expected.
Kagome,
I realize that we did not part as friends, and that you have a new life. Even so, I would like to talk to you. If you will come, I will be at the my apartment. The address, and a train ticket should both be clipped to the bottom of this paper. Please come.
