The Girl That Changed Him by Sariel
Power of HIs Sword
Chapter 1
Sesshomaru watched Rin playing with Un and An. She adored the dragon creature and it was fond of her as well. She was safer with them than she was with Jaken. He already knew that they were already savagely protective of the young human. Any time she was in any distress they appeared at her side to make sure she was safe. A few weeks ago, Kagura, Naraku's wind witch, tried to kidnap Rin while Sesshomaru took care of a demon that had been following them. Un and An thwarted the plan and protected Rin just as they had always done. Sesshomaru frowned at the thought of Rin being in the hands of that half demon and his bastard creations. He couldn't believe Naraku had the gall to try and steal his ward. When he found him, the half demon would feel the wrath of his sword.
Sesshomau leaned back against the tree behind him and closed his eyes. It was rare when he had the urge to rest, but now seemed like a good time. His senses absorbed his surroundings. It was peaceful here. It was safe. Even if it weren't his senses would pick up any danger.
Rin waved a long twig at Un and An. He playfully batted at it like a cat would a ribbon. Rin laughed and let them have the stick. Something caught Rin's eye and she looked up. A scrap of green cloth floated down from the sky. Rin watched it in awe, reached up, and plucked it out of the air. It had small stains of blood on it.
"Lord Sesshomaru, look what fell from the sky," she said jumping off Un and An. She ran over to him and held the fabric out to him. Sesshomaru took it from her. It reeked of human blood and he knew the scent. It belonged to that of Inuyasha's wench. Wherever that human was, Inuyasha wasn't far behind. Sesshomaru jumped to his feet and let his senses search out the possible threat.
"Where did you get this Rin?" he asked. She looked up.
"It fell from the sky," she said. He looked up and didn't see anything. The trees were thick and he couldn't even see the evening sky. The wind shifted and he caught it. It was the scent of that girl. But where was she? He couldn't smell his half demon brother anywhere, so why was she here? There was a rustling in the trees and he saw a body falling from one of the trees. Rin screamed and Sesshomaru jumped into the air. He caught the body before it hit the ground. He landed and looked down at the body. Just as he thought, it was Inuyasha's wench, but what happened to her? She was covered in blood and her clothing was torn into shreds. An arrow was buried in her chest. He could see profusely bleeding wounds in her shoulder where there had been two other arrows. The blood stained her paling skin and tattered clothing.
"What do you have there Lord Sesshomaru?" Jaken said scrambling up. He stopped short when he saw the unconscious human in the demon lord's arms. "That's that girl... That's Inuyasha's woman."
"Who is it?" Rin asked running up. She took one look at the girl and stopped short. Her eyes filled with fear and concern. She rushed up and took her hand. "Is she going to die Lord Sesshomaru?" She looked at him with wide pleading eyes. Sesshomaru could already hear the young woman's heart stopping. When he didn't answer her eyes filled with tears. The girl must be remembering when her parents were killed. She became frantic. She looked at him again and he felt something in his chest tighten. Her eyes were full of raw emotion. "She can't. You can save her! I know you can."
"Rin..."
"Please, Lord Sesshomaru. She..." Tears fell freely from the young girls eyes. He watched the girl for a moment. If Rin were any other human she would be dead for speaking to him like that. No human ordered him around, but this wasn't any human, this was Rin. Over the time they spent together he began to feel a growing need to protect this girl, and now he thought of her almost as a daughter. When she fell and hurt herself she didn't cry, but he knew she was in some sort of pain and it seemed to also make him hurt. She was hurting in ways he'd never understand, but he wanted to see her smile again. He didn't like to think of why he felt like this about a human, but right now he knew Rin would not recover from watching this wench die in front of her. It was a problem. He couldn't send her away until the human died, because she knew death and what happened. She knew things she shouldn't. He wished he could kill the demon that scarred this girl. "Please, Lord Sesshomaru! She's not bad..." the girl sobbed. He closed his eyes. There wasn't a demon around that could sway him, but to see that smile on her young face he would do anything.
"Jaken. Take Rin to the river and fetch some water," he said laying the woman down on the cool grass.
"Yes, Lord Sesshomaru," the green attendant said taking Rin's hand, but she immediately jerked away.
"But..."
"Do as I say Rin. She'll be fine." She watched him for a minute, as the realization set in a smile grew on her lips. "Now go." He said looking down at the wounded girl. Jaken grabbed the stunned girl's hand and guided her away from the scene.
"Wake up," he said. She didn't respond. He narrowed his eyes on the motionless girl. He reached down and nudged the girls wounded shoulder. The girl moaned and her eyes opened a little. She looked at him.
"Inu...yasha?"
Sesshomaru's eyes became cold. She must be on the verge of death if she thought that he was that half-breed. He resisted the urge to deliver the death blow by reminding himself that he told Rin she was going to be okay. If he gave his word, he followed through. He took solace in what he would have to do next. It would be his bit of revenge for her insult.
"This is going to hurt. Prepare yourself," he said taking hold of the arrow. She winced, but she didn't make any noise. She closed her eyes and moved her head to the side. She looked like she was bracing herself. Sesshomaru took this as his signal that she was ready, and swiftly pulled the arrow out. Her whole body tensed, and she clenched her teeth to keep herself from screaming. He knew she was in the worst pain of her miserable life, yet she was able to keep from making any noise. She deserved at least a small measure of respect for that. She was not like other humans. He'd seen humans cry over trivial things. Flesh wounds. The loss of a possession. Yet against agonizing pain this girl had not shed one tear. Intriguing.
Sesshomaru dropped the arrow. She gasped for air as waves of pain ate at her . Soon her breathing slowed. The pain passed and her eyes glazed over and the light in her eyes faded as messengers from the underworld appeared around her. Her heart stopped beating, and the messengers began making preparations to extract her soul. Sesshomaru stood and his hand went to Tenseiga, drew it, and swiped it at the messengers. They screamed and in a small flash of light they were gone along with the girl's injuries. Automatically, he sheathed the sword and knelt her. After a moment he could hear her heart begin to beat again. Life flowed back into her, and she blinked.
"Where..."
She sat up and came face to face with Sesshomaru. Their faces were inches apart. Sesshomaru didn't move, but her eyes widened in fear. She scrambled back away from him. "Sesshomaru!" she gasped. She was frozen in place and all she could do was stare at his emotionless face. Oh My GOD! Her breath stuck in her chest. His amber eyes bored into hers and read the obvious fear.
"Calm down, woman," he said rising up to his full height. Immediately, her expression changed to that of anger. She jumped to her feet and glared at him completely unaware of her state of near undress. He resisted the urge to look at the body and was perplexed by his urge to even look in the first place.
"I hate when people call me that," she shouted. "I have a name! It's Kagome! Don't the men in this era have any respect for women?" She was audacious for a woman.
Looks like the power of his father's sword worked again.
