Resident Evil: Chaos

Prologue

Tokyo, Japan was a thriving metropolis in the year 2004. But it was now 2005 and within less than a year, the tall skyscrapers had all but crumbled to nothing. Rubble was everywhere, from buildings and cars. Skeletons of cars were skattered and completely empty. Some even had flames within them still. Clouds hung low in a sky that would normally be bright and cloudless this time of year. Deep, blood red clouds that made the world appear to have a red haze about it. But for all the debris, rubble, and skeletons of cars, there wasn't a person in sight.

Here and there different pieces of fabric, papers, or different items stuck out from the rubble, fluttering in the wind blowing through the decimated metropolis. If one were to look closer, they would see the footprints in the dust, the blood littering everything, and the bullet holes that made the rubble look like swiss cheese. Empty shells, discared guns, and even clips for military weapons were seen everywhere as well, making the once flourishing city resemble a battlefield.

The only sounds were that of the cracking flames and the wind. Not a single voice, cry, or gunshot. Nothing. The city of Tokyo was empty, quiet, and by all means, dead. Or so one would have thought.

The first footstep was heard, a bloodied, bare foot dragging across the dusty cement. Then, as though their owners had appeared from thin air, hundreds upon thousands of footsteps could be heard. Not in unison like an army, but in such numbers that it resembled one. But the footsteps were soon followed by a loud, resounding moan. Then another, and another, and another until there were moans and groans and strange sounds echoing throughout the wasted landscape.

It was the city's inhabitants, barely recognizable as they trudged from all different directions. Different vicous fluids came from their moaing mouths, blood coating their gray skin and lips. Many looked as though they'd been sent through a blender. Each looked as though they'd been eaten or clawed to death in varying degrees. Several were even suffering a loss of limb as they staggered on.

They smelled of rotting flesh and several other distastful smells. The metallic smell of blood was heavy, as well as a strangely acidic smell that would have made anyone living gag or go into a coughing fit. But even if they smelled and looked so mutilated that they had to be dead, they kept walking. Walking towards one point in particular.

That point was a young woman.

Her frame was thin and shaking with exhaustion beneath her ripped clothes. Her clothes were a collection of military uniforms all thrown together just to cover her. Gashes and bruises covered her deathly pale skin, blood flowing mostly from two very intentional looking cuts on her wrists. Strapped at her thighs, waist, ankles, and arms were an assortment of knives and guns. The guns ranged from a regular hand gun, to that of calibur only military personel were granted access to. But at the time, her chosen weapon was a lone sword held in her right hand.

Her heavily bandaged hand was wrapped in a tight grip around the blue leather hilt of a katana that looked as though it had been a rather stunning weapon in the past. But now it's blade was chipped and scratched, blood dripping from the downward angled tip. The delicate hand clenching the once fine katana clenched a little tighter around the hilt. The hand was connected to a pale, heavily bleeding arm covered in bandages that didn't hinder the flow of the blood at all. Her black top was secured over her shoulder with a single silver fasten holding the thin fabric over her torso. At the spot where her shoulder and neck met, there was a strange scar. It was in the shape of a small crescent moon with two almost bite-looking marks on top of that.

Her face was heart shaped, and set in a look of grim determination. Her eyes were clenched closed, and her chin was pointed downward. She had long, inky black hair that was matted with dirt and blood. The tips reached the small of her back, but were currenlty billowing around her like a cape in the wind. Other than the fact that she was covered with weapons and the only seemingly alive person in view, there was somethin else that made her stand out.

Wings. Transparent, glittering wings were coming from her back. They were pure energy, pure power. Her power. They fluttered in the breeze as though they were made of silk, and several transparent feathers fluttered to the ground. Then suddenly, she looked foward and opened her eyes. Deep, sapphire blue eyes that held strange flecks of silver. But instead of lively along with all the swirling power, they were dull and near lifeless.

She could hear the moans getting louder, see they contorted and destroyed faces growing nearer. That's when her hand around the hilt of the sword clenched tight and began to glow with a bright blue hue. Then, she whispered a single plea.

"Onegai Tenseiga...grant me the power I need...so that I may join our Lord..." Her voice was quiet and strained. It held sadness, regret, disbelief, pleading, and exhaustion. But it seemed the sword had somehow heard her plea, and the hue that surrounded her hand quickly spread over the blade and the rest of her body. The aura around her flickered like flames as she watched the undead citizens grow nearer with her dull eyes.

She knew she had no time left, and could feel the very lifeforce within her quickly drain from her body. But in her mind she pleaded with the powers above her to let her linger only awhile longer, to let her finish the task so many had failed to complete. So many had risen to the challenge, and so many had failed. One after another, they had all fallen...And then gotten back up again as her enemy. That line of thought brought tears rushing to her eyes. Then, they spilled over and ran down her cheeks, leaving tracks through the dried blood, dirt, and even the fresh blood as they raced down her pale skin.

"I'll join them all soon...won't I?" With that, she began to lift the sword over her head, watching the hungry corpses grow nearer. Her aura flared danerously, not at all swaying the corpses. Faces of those lost flashed before her eyes as one particular corpse caught her eye. He was the one out front, freshly dead with the bullet hole right through his crescent moon marking. Even in this form, he still captivated her. So, as she pointed the blade of Tenseiga to the sky and let its power and her own erupt into the air as her tears fell heavier, she stared into his blank eyes.

"Gomen ne...my koi..." Her sapphire eyes suddenly swirled to a solid silver as did her long black hair, the blood caked on it shining brightly against the silver strands. Her eyes, though beginning to cloud with death and power, never left the blank, mindless ones of the corpse walking nearer.

"Gomen..." Her last whisper was covered up as the sword above her glowed brightly and cracked with electric power. The skies opened wide, allowing sunlight to flow down upon her as she radiated waves of purity. Then, she screamed in agony as the light around her changed from the shocking blue to a white that would have made anyone look away.

That's when twenty-four year old Higurashi Kagome sat up in her queen sized bed, screaming just as the woman had been. It took her a few moments to realize her surroundings as she shook in fear, feeling a strange tingle across her skin as she tried to calm her racing heart.

"What the hell?"
