The Ghost of You
The Ghost of You
// I never said
I'd lie in wait forever
If I died
We'd be together //
A warm fire burned in the stone fireplace. The flames danced to a mute tune. The light cast long shadows on the walls of the room. A lone figure sat in a leather chair, facing away from the fire, head hung low. A stack of books rested against the side of the chair, waiting to be read. He fingered the cover of the top book before grabbing it and started flipping through the pages. Page after page of old writing flew past as he closed it and grabbed the next one. After about an hour of this, he got up and returned all the books to their rightful places on the shelves. He stood by the fire place and stirred the wood as the light began to dim. He then leaned against the mantel and retreated to his thoughts.
'Why can't I find anything that can help me? I've looked at every book ever made on this subject in the past 5oo years and still nothing. If I can't find anything soon, I'm just going to give up. I never said I would try forever. I just said I would try.'
He then returned to his leather chair and turned it to face the fire. He sat in it and sighed. The light of the flames danced across his pale face. His white hair glowed in the firelight. His royal markings covered by a cloaking spell. His golden eyes burned with frustration. He tapped his claw tipped fingers together as he continued to think. He then looked at the painting that was above the fire place. It was a painting of him and his late bride.
He remembered when he had announced that they were husband and wife. No one believed that the Great SesshoMaru had taken a human as his wife but he did. And it was the best and worst mistake he ever made. The best for the reason that she made him smile. She had broken through the ice that he surrounded himself with. The worst for the reason she was taken so quickly. They hadn't been together but a month when the sacred jewel took her from him. He growled silently as he remembered the day.
// I can't always
Just forget her
But she could try //
They were sitting quietly together in his study, reading a book together. They had no worries because Naraku was long dead and his hanyou brother was in hell with his clay doll. Everything had been normal when suddenly, the jewel around her neck began to glow a bright pink. He was blown to the wall by the jewel as the light engulfed her body. She let out a blood curdling scream as the jewel began to absorb her body. He tried to save her but he couldn't get to her. Then, he was blinded by the light. When he could see, both she and the jewel were gone.
// At the end of the world
Or the last thing I see
You are
Never coming home
Never coming home
Could I?
Should I?
And all the things that
You never ever told me
And all the smiles that
Are ever
Ever //
That was the last time he saw her. On that day, he made her a promise. He would find a way to bring her back, no matter how long it took. But, he had looked for over 500 years and still there was nothing. He thought it was about time to give up and let go. He should accept that he will never see her smile again. That he will never hear her voice again. That she is never coming home again. He just couldn't accept that she was really gone. It was too hard for him. When it had happened, his world fell apart. And now it seemed it would happen again. He clenched his fangs together to fight the burning tears in his eyes.
// Ever get the feeling
That you're never
All alone and
I remember now
At the top of my lungs
In my arms she dies
She dies //
He stalked down the dark halls of his palace. The only light coming from the moon outside through the windows. His echoing footsteps breaking the silence of the night. He walked quicker, feeling a presence behind him. He rounded a corner and looked back at the hall. There was nothing there. He sighed, thinking he was just a little tense and was imagining things. He continued to walk but felt that presence again. He stopped and looked again. Nothing. He defiantly needed to get some sleep. He continued walking, the presence still following him. Soon, he reached his door. When he turned again, he saw a flash of white. He stared on but saw nothing else. He then entered his room and slept.
/ At the end of the world
Or the last thing I see
You are
Never coming home
Never coming home
Could I?
Should I?
And all the things that
You never ever told me
And all the smiles that
Are ever gonna haunt me //
He wrapped his arms around her waist, feeling her jump from surprise. A small smile appeared upon his face when she squealed her joy to him. He had been gone for almost a day. She turned around in his arms and gave him a welcome home kiss. They kissed for what seemed like an eternity. Then, she had to break for air. They smiled to each other as they entered the palace. They spent the afternoon together, doing whatever they pleased. After sunset, they went to the study to read a book together like they always had. While they sat near the fire, reading aloud to each other, the jewel around her neck began to glow. He reached for it but was blasted away from her glowing form. She cried out to him for him to save her but he was powerless. The light wouldn't let him near her. He watched in horror as her body was sucked into the small pink ball. Then, with a flash, both were gone. He went over to where she had just been moments before but found nothing but ashes upon the floor. He slammed his fists against the wood as he let out a howl of anger and loss.
He awoke with a start. He had had that dream again. He whipped the sweat off of his forehead as he laid back down. He stared at the ceiling. An image of her face appeared in his vision. Her smile mesmerized him. He missed her smile, her laughter and her tears. He couldn't accept that she was gone. He just couldn't. He didn't want to admit that he couldn't save her, that she was gone. He knew that to the end of his days, he would be haunted by her memory and in a way, he was ok with that. It meant he wouldn't forget her. It also meant he would be drenched with guilt till that day. He closed his eyes and continued to sleep.
// Never coming home
Never coming home
Could I?
Should I?
And all the wounds that
Are ever gonna scar me
For all the ghosts that
Are never gonna catch me //
He awoke again in the middle of the night. This time however, it wasn't a dream that had awoken him. He had felt a cold hand upon his arm. He sat in his bed, his arm was still freezing cold. He didn't know what had touched him but they were freezing cold. As he continued thinking on that, he heard something. It sounded like foot steps. He quickly stood and grabbed his robe. He put it on and stepped into the hall. He looked to see another flash of white rounding a corner. He quickly followed it but when he rounded the same corner, there was nothing. He stood there a moment, thinking through the situation. Then, he heard something.
// If I fall
If I fall
Down //
He walked to the door along the wall and put his ear to it. He could hear faint singing. He grabbed the handle and opened the door. To his shock, there was nothing there. Yet he still heard singing. He stepped in the room, it was freezing. He looked around the room. This was her room. Her personal room for when they would argue and she didn't want to sleep with him. This was where she had spent so many lonely nights. He felt someone behind him. He turned to see no one. He then felt another cold hand. It had grabbed his. He turned to see a white orb by his hand. He quickly pulled his hand away and ran back to his room.
// At the end of the world
Or the last thing I see
You are
Never coming home
Never coming home
Never coming home
Never coming home
And all the things that
You never ever told me
And all the smiles that
Are ever gonna haunt me //
As he ran, he spotted the orb in front of him. He stopped running ran the other way. But the orb was there too. It began to float close to him. He backed away from it until he was against a wall, even then it still floated closer. It stopped when it was right in his face. Then, he felt a cold hand cup his cheek. It was cold but felt familiar. He then felt another hand cup the other side of his face. He closed his eyes. Then he heard the faint whisper of a voice.
"SesshoMaru."
He opened his eyes and stared in shock. Before him, the orb had turned into the ghostly image of his late wife. He tried to touch her but his hands went right through her. He settled on staring into her icy blue eyes. A smile was upon her transparent face. An almost invisible tear slide down her white cheek. He wished he could wipe it away for her but he couldn't.
"Kagome, how?"
"I never left. I was always here."
She placed a ghostly hand over his frantically beating heart.
"Why didn't you show yourself before?"
"I have wondered these halls for 5oo years and you didn't see me. You were to determined to get me back. Once you accepted that I was dead did my presence affect you. I have never left you my love. I have always been here. And I always will be. I promise."
She then placed a frozen kiss upon his lips. A kiss to seal her promise, to say hello, to say I love you and that I always will. When he opened his eyes again, her image was gone. He sighed and walked back to his room. He laid in his bed, thinking about what had just happened. He wondered if he had imagined it all or if it was real. It was then that the small orb appeared again, this time, it was sitting upon his night stand. He reached for it. He held the white orb in his hands. He then realized what he was holding was the sacred jewel. It was pure, it could no longer be tainted. As he continued to stare at the jewel, a cold hand rested itself upon his shoulder. He looked up to see her ghostly image resting against him.
"Why did you give me the jewel?"
"When you possess it, I am as solid as I was when I was alive. The jewel didn't kill me SesshoMaru, it gave me a second chance at life."
"What do you mean?"
"I freed me of my painful past with Inuyasha. It purified my soul. I'm an angel now. I'm your angel. That is why I will always be here. With the jewel, I can hold you like I used to, feel your warmth like I used to."
"Kiss you like I used to."
With that said, he shared a kiss with his angel. Her ghostly form was warm instead of cold. It was as warm as it was when she was alive. He held her close like he had done all those centuries ago. He felt complete, whole, knowing that she would be with him to the end. And then they would still be together.
// Never coming home
Never coming home
Could I? Should I?
And all the wounds that
Are ever gonna scar me
For all the ghosts that
Are never gone //
She was never really gone, just waiting for her love to realize that she was never coming home because she already was.
