“Name.”
“Higurashi, Kagome.”
“Year.”
“Junior.”
“Ah yes, here you are. A transfer student I see. Well, you’ll find your schedule, rules and regulations, map, etcetera, etcetera, in the envelope. Hope you enjoy you year here Higurashi, Kagome.”
“I hope I do too. Thank you.” Flashing the woman at the counter a smile, she took the deep yellow folder and pushed her way through the door.
Kagome had decided to transfer to Tokyo U after being offered a very generous financial aide package, one that she couldn’t possibly refuse. So, she had bid her family and friends goodbye in Osaka and traveled to Tokyo, albeit nervous but excited all the same. She really didn’t know what to expect from such a large campus and student body but she was ready to find out.
It was a new year in a new place and she was going to make the best of things no matter what was thrown her way. She wasn’t the type to give up easily and succumb to pressures and in no way would she start now.
Staring down at the map she had extracted from the envelope, Kagome recognized the building she was currently standing in front of on the crisp white paper. She quickly perused it and furrowed her brows in thought.
“It’s definitely a big campus, hmmmm….now to just figure out where my classes are.” She mumbled to herself but then suddenly remembered that she had an interview in, looking at her watch, ten minutes!
“Ah!” She stuffed the paper into her purse and made a dash for the small café about a mile or so away. So much for trying to be on time!
~~~~~~~
Kagome ran into the café but stopped in her tracks to catch her breath. Quickly flattening her windblown hair and ruffled clothes, she made her way to the third table on the right, seeing a woman with black hair already sitting there. Taking a deep breath, she calmly approached her, hoping that she could keep the embarrassment from her voice.
“Um, hello. I’m Higurashi, Kagome. Sorry that I’m a little late.”
The woman looked up and grinned, her chocolate brown eyes warm. “Hirai, Sango and don’t worry about it. I just got here myself.” She motioned with the wave of her hand for Kagome to sit down and she happily did so, feeling relieved that she didn’t keep her interviewer waiting.
“Nice to meet you Ms. Higurashi.”
“Please, just Kagome. I can’t stand the ‘Ms’ part.”
“Me either. It makes me feel old for some reason.” Sango admitted, liking her already.
“Have you lived in Tokyo before?”
“Nope, I’ve lived in Osaka all my life. I’m a transfer student.” Kagome replied.
“Osaka? I have some cousins that live there, Ban and Jak—”
“The Ban and Jak?!” Kagome’s eyes widened as she interrupted and soon began to laugh.
It was Sango’s turn to gape in surprise. “You know them?”
“Of course I know them! I went to high school with those bakas! They’re pretty good guys.” She had stopped in her laughter, now much more relaxed.
“Talk about your coincidences.” Sango grinned and shook her head, suddenly making up her mind. If anyone could stand Ban and Jak than they had to be a good and patient person. Her cousins were quite the unusual pair.
“You’ve got the room Kagome. Payment is 200 dollars a month and as long as you pay on time there won’t be a problem. There are two others including me that live in the apartment and I know that you won’t have a problem with them, at least I’m assuming you won’t. Here are the keys so if you want to come by later or tomorrow, just swing by. I’ll mention it to the guys.”
Kagome sat there, dumbstruck for a moment, letting the words ‘you’ve got the room Kagome’ sink in. She got the room! Who knew it would be this easy! She abruptly pulled the other woman into a tight embrace.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you so much!”
Sango began to laugh and hugged her back. “Hey, I figured if you could stand Jak and Ban than you can stand us. However, I have another engagement I need to get to so if you could—”
“Oh of course!” Kagome quickly detached herself from the slightly taller woman.
“I’ll see you later Kagome!” Sango waved as she walked out the café door.
But all of a sudden the last part of what Sango had said a few moments before struck her. ‘Guys. Were her two other roommates to be, guys?’ She sat down slowly, contemplating the new found revelation. ‘If they are, hopefully they aren’t slobs…’ she thought offhandedly.
