Sticks and Stones don't hurt like your words
Chapter One
~~***~~
Kagome's face was a mask of determination. She had just returned to the feudal era after a lengthy talk with her mother. It was time to tell InuYasha just how much she cared for him. She loved him so much and it grew more and more every day. She couldn't bear to hide it from him any longer. It pained her to think about what he would say about Kikyo, but it was something that had to be done. She had to know.
"InuYasha!" Her voice called through InuYasha's forest. It wavered slightly in her nervousness. She got no answer. "InuYasha!" She tried again. Still no reply. She groaned. "SIT!" A thud in the distance gave her her destination. With a sigh she jumped up onto her bike and rode toward the sound of his muffled cursing.
It didn't take long. "Wench! What'd ya do that for?!?!?" Kagome huffed. "You wouldn't answer me! Now be quiet and listen. There's something very important I need to talk to you about." For once, he did fall silent. As if anticipating the importance of her words. "I couldn't think of an extravagant way to say this so I'm just going to say it." She took deep breath. "InuYasha, I-I love you." He stared at her for a long time, dumbfounded. "You mean it?" She nodded. His next move shocked her. He drew her into his arms and held her tight. "I love you too Kagome." Her eyes began to water a little as she looked up. 'Here goes.' "But, what about Kikyo?"
InuYasha actually took the time here to think before speaking. (*Gasp*) "The Kikyo that Urasue brought back form the dead, is not the Kikyo I fell in love with 50 years ago. She died a long time ago. I realize that. I love you Kagome." She smiled. Honestly and truly smiled with joy. He kissed her. It was sweet kiss. A passionate kiss. Kagome's first kiss. InuYasha released her mouth for air and grabbed her hand. "Let's go to Kaede's hut." She nodded and walked away with him. She would have followed him anywhere at that moment, just to know he loved her. If only it could have lasted.

It was late at night. InuYasha and Kagome had announced to the group that they were officially a couple. Miroku had grinned and asked what kind of couple, thus receiving a whack from Sango's Hiraikotsu. Shippo had grinned saying that now he could have a mother and a father. Sango had just muttered finally and rolled her eyes. Kaede had smiled her knowing smile and given them her blessing.
They had eaten well and now all were asleep. Except, for InuYasha and Kagome. InuYasha was not because he had snuck out to go somewhere. Kagome was not simply because he was not. She pulled herself out of her sleeping bag, careful not to wake Shippo, grabbed her bow and arrows, and left the hut.
Kagome crept quietly through the trees. She knew that no demons lived in InuYasha's forest, but it still gave her the creeps. The sound of voices to her left drew her to the sound. In an instant, she felt her whole world come crumbling down to rest near her just-as broken heart.
InuYasha stood in the middle of a clearing embracing none other than the Kikyo he'd said he didn't love only hours before. Kikyo looked up at him, her eyes filled with hatred and deceit. "But what of my reincarnation?" InuYasha didn't even hesitate. "She doesn't mean anything to me Kikyo. She's just a stupid shard detector." Kikyo smiled. "Good. When will you come with me to hell?" "As soon as I have killed Naraku."
Kagome couldn't take it anymore. Hot tears streamed down her face only to fall to the ground break with a splash. 'Just like my heart.' she though sadly. Listening became to much for her to handle and she turned and ran from the clearing, still sobbing, into the forest. Her hands covered her crying face and she not where she was going. Nor did she care. It didn't matter what happened to her now. InuYasha had lied. He didn't love her. One thought puzzled her though. 'Why? Why did he lie?' She had no answer, so she kept running. As the night wore on, it began to rain. Kagome tripped and fell over a tree root onto the ground. 'Just like my heart.' She didn't care enough to get up. She simply laid there and sobbed until there were no more tears left. Then she slept. Hoping, praying, that maybe she wouldn't wake up to face the pain.
