Kagome blinked her eyes and shook her head. She didn't think that she had heard Inu Yasha right. But as she gazed up to his face, she finally registered what he had said to her.

"Kagome, I want you to allow me to make a wish on the Shikon. I have decided to do something that should have been done a long time ago, and now it is time that I see it through. I want to become human, and I want the shikon to bring Kikyo back to life so that we can have the life that we should have had before Naraku entered the picture." He said while avoiding her eyes.

"I see. So, you would much rather be with someone who has tried to kill you on a number of occasions, instead of with me. I have stood by your side when no one else cared about you. I ended my friendship with Kouga for you. And now you are telling me that it was in vain? How could you do this to me? You told me that you loved me. Why would you do this?" Kagome yelled as tears slipped freely down her face.

Inu Yasha could not answer her. The truth be told, he only said that he loved her to get her to tell Kouga to leave her alone. But Kikyo was the one who occupied his every waking thought, and he could not stand to be away from her anymore.

"I understand that you are angry. But I want the jewel, and if need be, I will take the jewel. Don't you understand, I belong to Kikyo. I do care for you, Kagome, but it is Kikyo who has my heart. Please try to see it from my point of view." Inu Yasha said with a hint of desperation in his voice.

Kagome looked over at Miroku and Sango. They avoided her gaze as well, and it suddenly occured to Kagome that they knew what he was going to do all along. All at once different emotions hit Kagome as she struggled to come to terms with the information she had just been handed. She was angry that they knew before she did and didn't even warn her. She felt betrayed. So Kagome decided that if Inu Yasha wanted the jewel, it would come with a price.

"All right, Inu Yasha. You want the jewel? Well, I want Tetsaiga. The jewel for your sword. That is the deal, take it or leave it." Kagome said in a flat voice.

Inu Yasha could not believe his ears. She wanted him to give up his precious sword. He stared at Kagome to see if she was joking, but the look in her eyes told him that she was deadly serious.

"Kagome, I need the Tetsaiga to protect me and Kikyo." Inu Yasha said.

Kagome shook her head. She was not going to listen to another one of his excuses. Not anymore. She would no longer be played for a fool. Not by him, not by anyone.

"The choice is yours. I suppose you could try and take it, but touch me and I will purify you straight to hell. The offer stands and is good for the next five minutes. The jewel for the sword. Now decide. Isn't Kikyo worth trading the sword for?" Kagome said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

Inu Yasha looked over at Miroku for help, but he simply shrugged. As for Sango, she would not even look at him. So, he was left to make this decision on his own. Kagome never expected for him to make his mind up so fast. Inu Yasha grabbed the sword and threw it at her feet. She stared at him and then bent down and rolled the jewel to him. Inu Yasha grabbed it up, and made his wish. All of a sudden he was surrounded in a pinkish light and his white hair turned black. Soon, he was completly transformed into a human man. He broke out into a grin and began to run to the village that he knew Kikyo often frequented. Kagome picked up the tetsaiga and began to walk away. She heard Miroku call to her, but she didn't answer him. She simply felt dead inside. She was tired. Now that Inu Yasha had made a wish that the jewel deemed unselfish, it dissappeared and she no longer had a reason to protect it. Her purpose for staying was gone. She could not even go home. Now that the jewel was gone, she was stuck in the warring states era. Kagome walked back to the village that Kaede lived in and went to her hut. Inside, Kagome reached for her backpack and changed into a tee-shirt and jeans. She looked down at her sailor's outfit and told Kaede to burn them. No longer was she the innocent girl who had been dragged into a magical well. Now she was a woman scorned and did not desire to be around those she felt had betrayed her. She tied the tetsaiga around her waist and lifted her pack onto her back. She looked back at Kaede and gave her a weak smile. Kagome never wanted to return here. She began to exit the hut, and bumped into Miroku and Sango. They saw that she had her belongings and had changed. She could not meet their eyes. Their betrayal was the straw that had broken this Kagome's back. Sango tried to say something to her, but Kagome walked by her without even acknowledging her and continued to walk. She walked until she was sure that she was no longer near the village. Now, she could feel the tears starting to form. Her heart breaking, she allowed herself to walk to a tree and slump to the ground and cried. She cried for her broken heart. Never before had the hurt been so bad, but when Inu Yasha told her that he would rather be with Kikyo instead of her, that nearly killed her. So Kagome did the only thing she could think of a the moment, she cried until she felt that no more tears could possibly come out of her body. Her life ruined, she decided that she would wander until she found a place that she could finally call home. Somewhere that she wasn't constantly being reminded that she was some reincarnation. Somewhere where she could just be Kagome and lead a peaceful life.

Miroku looked over at Sango as she told Kaede what had transpired between Inu Yasha and Kagome. Sango kept fighting back the tears, but pretty soon she was overcome with sobs that she could not finish the story. So, Miroku finished for her. After listening to the tale, Kaede shook her head. She knew that Kagome was upset, but now that she had heard everything that had happened, her heart went out to the little miko and she grieved for everything Kagome had lost.

"Ye must not blame yourselves for anything. Inu Yasha made the choice. Kagome is lost right now, and needs to be left alone. Time heals all wounds, but sometimes wounds of the heart take longer to heal than physical wounds." Kaede said in her soft voice.

Miroku nodded, but he knew that Kagome had figured out that he and Sango had known what Inu Yasha was planning and was upset that they didn't warn her. When she had bumped into them in front of Kaede's hut, she didn't even look at them. He let out a long sigh and said a silent prayer to Buddah that he would watch over Kagome and keep her safe until she felt strong enough to return.

Night fall was coming quickly and Kagome had gone several miles before finally deciding to stop and make camp. She decided to pull tetsaiga out of its sheath and look at the sword. The blade itself was beautiful and seemed to pulse in her hands. How odd it felt to hold a sword instead of a bow and arrow. She swung the sword around a bit to get a feel for it, and decided to practice with it every chance she got. 'Hopefully, I will get good enough with it to use to protect myself effectively.' She thought. Kagome felt nervous as she listened to the noises that surrounded her. But she did her best to ignore them and tried to relax. Soon sleep came and took her hostage. Her dreams were soon invading her head, and she found herself in a cave. She looked around and saw a statue of a woman fighting some sort of dragon. She recognized this statue. It was of Midoriko. The warrior priestess who slew thousands of demons before finally meeting her end. It was from she that the shikon appeared. As Kagome approached the statue, she looked up at the priestess's face. Suddenly the priestess's eyes opened and she looked straight at Kagome.

"Bring yourself to me child. We must speak of urgent matters." Midoriko said.

"Bring myself to you? Why?" Kagome answered. She was confuses as to why Midoriko wanted to see her.

"Do not ask me questions, girl. You will obey me. A new evil is approaching and you are not even close to being ready to deal with it. Now, come. Become the priestess that you are destined to be." She said as a bright white light surrounded her.

Kagome jumped up from her sleep with a start. She could not figure out if it was real or not. But she could not forget Midoriko's words. Kagome could see that light was beginning to find its way into the sky, and she decided to go on the the demon exterminator village and find out for herself if she imagined the whole thing. Kagome honestly did not want any more adventures, but for some reason she felt that she had to go. So, after she had eaten, Kagome began the walk to the village and to the cave where she knew the statue of Midoriko stood.

It was nearly dark by the time Kagome reached the village, and as expected, it was deserted. She walked to the cave and could tell that the barrier at the entrance still held strong. She passed through and made her way to where the statue stood. There she was. Midoriko. Even as a statue, Kagome could tell that in life she had been beautiful.

"Well, here I am. You asked me to come, so what do you want?" Kagome called. But as she thought, she recieved no answer. She giggled at her stupidity, and turned to leave the cave. But then a hand fell on her shoulder and when she turned around, Kagome was face-to-face with Midoriko herself. The older woman smiled at Kagome.

"I see that you wisely took my advice to come. That's good. It means that you are able to accept possibilites even if they do seem far fetched." Midoriko said.

Kagome watched as the woman began to walk around her as if she were sizing her up. Finally, Kagome's curiosity got the better of her.

"Why did you call me here, Lady Midoriko?" She asked.

The woman smiled and looked down at the tetsaiga.

"I see that you managed to get the sword from the half-breed. That is good. You are going to need it shortly. But first, we need to get your training started. I am afraid that your powers as a miko are still on the weak side, but with intensive training, you will be one of the strongest mikos who ever lived." Midoriko said.

"Wait, I don't want to train. I just want to live a normal life. I don't want to fight anymore." Kagome said as the memories of Inu Yasha came flooding back to her. She could not help it, but tears quickly began to roll down her cheek.

Midoriko lifted her finger to Kagome's cheek and gently brushed away the tears.

"My dear, you are as far away from normal as you can get. Doesn't it seem odd to you that you traded the jewel for a sword that you don't even know how to work? Why did you ask for the sword? Well, I will tell you. Even though the half breed's father left it to him, the sword was designed to protect humans, especially you. So, after he decided to become human, the sword knew that its work with him was done. And since you are the human that it recognizes, it chose you to be its new master. I will teach you to weild it. But be warned, it will be hard work. I cannot survive in your reality, so in order to train you, I will place us in a reality that will allow us to train. Kagome, please understand that it was no accident that you are the one that was chosen to stand against this new evil that is coming. You must take your rightful place amongst the warrior priestesses." Midoriko said.

Kagome watched as Midoriko waved her hand and all of a sudden, they were no longer in the cave, but in a large field. Kagome shook her head and wondered what exactly had she gotten herself into. Midoriko turned to the young woman and cupped her face in her hands.

"I will help you so that you never need a man's protection. You will be able to depend on yourself. The time for tears is over, Kagome. Now is the time to allow yourself to change and accept who you are, and take hold of your destiny." She said.

Kagome listened to Midoriko's words carefully. The thought of never needing assistance again appealed to her greatly. She could take care of herself, and she would never again experience the feeling of heart break. With her decision made, Kagome turned to Midoriko.

"So when do we start, and how long does training usually last?" She asked.

"Training a miko usually takes two years. But to train a warrior miko such as myself, it usually takes up to five years." Midoriko looked over at Kagome's face and began to laugh at her horrified expression. "Don't worry, little one. In this reality, five years will pass as it normally would in your reality, but when you go back to the reality you come from, only a couple months will have passed. You will walk out from the cave a warrior miko. The last of our kind."

Kagome let out a sigh of relief and followed Midoriko into a small cabin. As she settled down for the night, Kagome remembered the words that Midoriko had spoken before she laid down.

"Tomorrow at dawn, your training begins. Prepare yourself, miko." Midoriko had said.

Kagome snuggled down into a blanket and shivered. 'At least I will be able to put Inu Yasha and the others behind me and look towards the future.' she thought before sleep claimed her.
